The Red Crescent is an organization equivalent to the Red Cross in Islamic countries. It was accepted by the International Committee at the urging of circumstances, since in the war of 1876 between Russia and the Ottoman Empire Muslim soldiers confused the Greek cross 10010; (Swiss neutrality) with the Latin Cross 10013; (Christianity) and were wary of humanitarian aid. It was later adopted by Egypt and other Islamic nations in addition to Turkey. The Turkish name is K?z?lay, formed by K?z?l ("red") Ay ("moon").
